Teaching Support Tips
Practical ideas to keep phonics lessons engaging, flexible and effective for every child.
When Nothing Is Working?
Each child learns differently. Some children learn best with images, others through listening, movement or hands-on activities. Try using visual, auditory and kinesthetic tasks so every child has a way into the lesson. If some children need extra support, take time to review key ideas with them. This can help the whole group feel more confident and ready to continue.
Is It Fun to Learn Using Phonics?
Phonics works best when children are active and engaged. Use games, movement, sound-matching activities and short competitions where children can earn points for identifying sounds or blending words. Change activities every five minutes to help maintain attention and energy. A dynamic lesson keeps phonics enjoyable and memorable.
Have You Covered the Full Teaching Plan?
Remember to include every key part of the lesson: Start, Review, Teach, Practice and Use. You can change the order sometimes, but try not to always leave out the same stage.
Start
Get the children excited about what they are going to learn today.
Review
Go over previous sounds using flashcards, quick writing or games.
Teach
Introduce the new sound or skill clearly and make it interesting.
Practice
Use repeated games and activities so children can practise many times.
Use
Let children apply the sound by reading or writing words and sentences.
Keep the lesson fresh, playful and flexible. Mixing things up helps children stay curious, but a clear structure helps them feel secure and ready to learn.
